Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to erect and dismantle formwork for basic slabs on ground, rebates to slabs on ground and steps to strip footings in residential and commercial sites.It includes:establishing required levels on siteconstructing formwork using boxing materials such as timber, metal, masonry, fibre cement sheeting or reconstituted timber productsusing fixings to contain wet poured concrete until it is completely curedstripping the formwork and preparing and storing it for re-use.This unit is designed for those working as a member of a team safely erecting and dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground. It applies to workers in the construction industry. It involves working under supervision in a team environment.No licensing, legislative, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan and prepare to erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.
  • Review and clarify task to erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.
  • Assess work site to determine scope of work.
  • Review design of footing and/or slab on ground from job drawings and specifications, and check to make sure it is in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.
  • Identify safety signage and barricade requirements.
  • Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.
  • Select plant, tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.

  • Erect identified safety signage and barricades, and fit personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Set out formwork to requirements of drawings and specifications.
  • Select fixings and fasteners.
  • Construct and erect formwork shutters and/or edge boxing.
  • Brace formwork support.
  • Install block-outs and cast-in services to specified locations.
       
Element: Dismantle formwork for footings and slabs on ground.
  • Remove edge boxing and bracing/strutting support sequentially and safely.
  • De-nail, clean and store or stack timber components safely for re-use or removal from site.
  • Clean and oil steel components, then store or stack to manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Discard damaged formwork components safely after stripping.
       
Element: Clean up after dismantling formwork for footings and slabs on ground.
  • Clear work area and dispose of, re-use or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and task requirements.
  • Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.

Assessment Tasks
